LAN Party 4/26: Aftermath
We had around 11 people arrive, 7 with their computers. An X-Box 360 was playing Rock Band on the other side of the room. There were no tournaments, but people started up games with Unreal Tournament 2004 and Halo.

I’d like to take a tally of games that people would like to see being played at the LAN party. Currently, these are the selections that I think most people would like, but we are open to other suggestions. For more LAN party details go here

Right now Google is accepting applications for their summer of code program in which they will sponsor students to work with an open-source project over the summer. In the program you communicate with a mentor from an open-source project(Here is a list of programs) who will guide you in taking on a programming task for their project. I think Google is giving $4500 to each student who successfully completes the program. It sounds like something fun to do over the summer and it would look good on a resume. The application deadline is March 31st. Go to the Summer of Code page for more info.
We are holding another programming competition on the Monday after Spring Break. It will be held in OCNL 431 at 5:30 PM. Please see the competition site for further information and practice problems.
We Hosted the ACM Mock Competitive Programming Contest.
Approximately 5-7 teams of two were given three problems to solve within 2 hours. While the main purpose was to solve some problems, the secondary goal of having fun and getting the comp sci community together was overly achieved. There was a fun yet serious tone as the teams thought long and hard about the problems.
Congratulations to the winners David, and John.
Dwight and Tou came in Second with Paul and John coming in third.
Overall, the session was successful and we should continue to promote such events.
CGC is hosting a LAN party this Saturday night(March 1st) from 5-9:30 in OCNL 254, so “bring your rig, monitor, and headset” and frag the night away. I believe Starcraft, Counter-Strike and Warcraft 3 will be played but that’s not for sure.
We’ve set the date for the competitions to regularly be on the 4th Monday of every month at 5:30 PM, our first competition will be Monday March 3rd at 5:30 PM in OCNL 436. We will compete in teams of 2 or 3 for about a 2 hour time segment, working on 3 or 4 different problems. For more info about the problems and the competition go to our competition page .
We’ve posted sample problems on the competition page as well and if you finish one of the sample problems by the first competition you will have a chance to win a sweet prize. Don’t hesitate on coming and competing, even if the problems seem overwhelming or you are just getting started with programming.
